OSFMount is a freeware tool which is designed to be used alongside Passmark OSForensics but can be freely used by anyone to mount virtual drives. ImgDrive supports command line options which is great for batch files or mounting from desktop shortcuts. There’s also a couple of options to create an ISO from a folder or from a physical disc. A useful feature is the ability to mount a folder as a virtual drive. Files can be mounted with a double click, from the context menu, from the tray icon menu or from the GUI. ImgDrive can mount up to seven virtual drives at once and it supports six different types of image file.

In addition to an installer version, there’s also a portable version of ImgDrive. Yubsoft’s ImgDrive doesn’t seem to get much mention around the internet but it’s a lightweight and useful virtual drive mounting tool to have around. The standard ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver user interface and Control Panel applet are still there if you want access to the more advanced options. Apart from drive letter selection or the ability to mount the image file on startup, the other options in the mount new window don’t need to be touched unless you know what they do. Right click on a file and select “Mount as ImDisk…” or launch the Mount Image File shortcut. ImDisk can also mount and create Ramdisks but if you don’t want to use it the option can be turned off during install.Īn image file can be mounted to any available drive letter. They are both free and very similar but we’ll look at the WinArchiver version here because it has a few extra features. For Intel processors, look up your own processor model and check for virtualization under “Advanced Features.” For AMD processors, look up your processor model and look for a feature listing called “AMD Virtualization Technology.Power Software makes WinArchiver Virtual Drive and gBurner Virtual Drive. If you don’t know whether your CPU supports hardware virtualization, you can check for yourself on Intel and AMD’s websites. When your new virtual PC is ready, it will appear in VirtualBox’s list of available machines (powered off at the moment, we note). Once you’re ready, click Next to create your virtual machine. The 64-bit version needs a minimum of 20GB. On the next screen, make sure that your virtual disk has at least 16GB allocated to it for the 32-bit version of Windows 8. You can select either a “Dynamically allocated” or “Fixed size” virtual hard drive based on your personal preferences–we suggest you use the “Dynamically allocated” disk on our installation. Leave the “Virtual Hard Disk” options and subsequent “Create New Virtual Disk” options exactly as they are, unless you think you’ll need to access your virtual hard drive in a separate virtual machine application. The 32-bit version of Windows 8 requires 1 gigabyte at minimum, and the 64-bit version requires 2GB, but the more RAM you can give the virtual OS, the better it will run. Click Next, and you’ll be taken to a screen that asks how much memory you’d like to devote to the virtual operating system.
